Seeing Things (Happy Holidays Edition)

With the holidays upon us again (already? really?), I'm seeing signs of the season everywhere. Maybe it's because I'm feeling rather festive (despite my best efforts to pretend I'm too cool to listen to Christmas music and make a gingerbread house), but these designs seem to distinctly resemble certain winter-time and holiday-related articles.

The playful yet functional form of the lacquered metal Ruben coatrack from Casamania is fairly reminiscent of another helpful sort of [flying] deer.

The gold-leafed aluminum sphere of the Gemma candle holder from Cattelani & Smith enhances the warm glow of a lit candle.

'Tis the season for snow, and snowballs, and lights. So why not lights that look like snowballs? When seen like this, it's hard to imagine that Catellani & Smith's Fil de Fer light was made for any purpose other than to glow brightly in a bed of freshly fallen snow.

For the Briccole Collection from Riva 1920, retired posts from the Venice Canal are re-purposed and given new life in the form of furniture and jewelry. Designed by the prolific Claudio Bellini, the posts of the Venice console are frozen within a steely surface.

Each limited-edition Ball chair from Arflex is rendered in stainless steel, numbered, and signed by the designer, Carlo Colombo. They might be a little heavy for the Christmas tree, but make for a great place to perch with a cocktail by the fire.

Even before the temperature dropped (for about a week), I couldn't help but see jagged Alpine peaks when admiring these hand-crafted resin Faceture vases from London-based artist, Phil Cuttance

Snow is something the Finnish are all too familiar with, so it seems only natural that Woodnotes would be inspired by the delicate beauty of a fresh coat of it. Granted the Interior Innovation Award in 2007, Flake consists of snowflake-like pieces joined together by slipping the point of a flake through the hole of another flake.

When I was first introduced to these Scholten & Baijings merino wool pillows from Thomas Eyck, the striped color schemes instantly brought to mind the delicate subtleties in color gradation often accomplished only by nature. I'm still just as impressed and in love with them now.

Made of a single strand of wool from Dutch sheep on Texelaar Island, Christien Meindertsma's Texelaar poufs practically beg for a warm cat and a crackling fire this time of year.
